Running a Restaurant
Running a Restaurant in 5 Simple Steps
Running a restaurant is not something that you can do without planning. There are many aspects of running a restaurant that must be considered before you serve your first customer. You need to ensure that you have the right concept, the right menu, the right location, the right employees and that you are following all the laws and regulations set for your area. Do not be worried, though, there are five simple steps that you can take to help ensure you have not forgotten anything.
Step One: Come Up With a Concept
There are many different types of restaurants. You need to decide what type of restaurant yours will be. Think about the type of service. Do you want to be a fast food restaurant or would you rather be full service? Maybe you want to try something unique like a drive in style. You also must consider the food you will be serving. Often defining your menu will naturally lead you to the type of restaurant you will have. For example, when you are serving elegant, gourmet foods then you would naturally be inclined to have a full service restaurant.
To complete this step you must have decided the type of restaurant and have your menu fully planned out. Do not forget about all the aspects of the menu, from appetizers to desserts to beverages.
Step Two: Find a Location
Your restaurant concept needs a home in order for your restaurant to become a reality. You should take time to carefully consider the location for your restaurant. You want the location to fit right in with your concept. You probably would not do good with a high class gourmet restaurant located in poor section of town. Do a lot of searching and always check out a location in person before making your decision.
When you find a location you will then need to think about design. You should make your decor inviting and ensure that it will work with the overall concept to create the physical manifestation for your restaurant.
Step Three: cover your Legal Bases
After you have your concept and the physical restaurant in place you should go over all the legal aspects of running a restaurant. You need to check into any permits you will need and all the applicable laws. You should probably have a lawyer on hand to help you with all the legal details.
Step Four: Hire Help
Once all the details are in place you are about ready to open your doors to customers, but there is still something important missing. You cannot undertake running a restaurant by yourself. You need some help. Hiring employees is not going to be simple, but you should always make sure you have the final word in the process. You might want to get help from a staffing agency who can refer qualified applicants to you. You can place ads, too. Make sure that you choose employees who have the skills needed to do the job and always check their background and references for verification.
Step Five: Market your Restaurant
Once you have hired your help you are ready to get the word out about your restaurant. You need to put together an effective marketing campaign. Make sure that you are targeting your marketing efforts to the people who are most likely to be your customers. Put out ads that will reach your target market. You might even want to pass out coupons to encourage people to come to your restaurant.
Once you have completed all these steps you are ready for opening day. Make sure that you have everything organized and that every employee is ready for the opening day. It will be a hectic and stressful day, but when it is all over you can bask in the glory of knowing your have reached your goal of running a restaurant.
